The newly funded projects and their directors include:
Christmas at DePaul: Karen Cullen, Office of the Secretary. $5,000 to support the musical and artistic retelling of the Christmas Story at St. Vincent de Paul Church this past December 2007.
Translation Services for Catholic Higher Education Book: The Rev. J. Patrick Murphy, C.M., School of Public Services. $1,500 to assist in translation of the Portuguese and English book, LIDERANÇA E GESTÃO DA EDUCAÇÃO SUPERIOR CATÓLICA NAS AMÉRICAS (Leadership and Management of Catholic Higher Education in the Americas).
DePaul Leadership Scholars Retreat: Evan Blewett, student. $3,000 to support a retreat for 40 DePaul Leadership Scholars to reflect upon spirituality, leadership and service.
Health Disparities and Social Justice Conference: Gary Harper, Psychology. $5,000 to support a day-long conference for community members to increase identification skills needed to address a variety of health disparities in diverse communities.
Operation Read and Restore: Brett Nunn, Library. $2,000 to assist with shipping costs for books, magazines and movies sent overseas to U.S. servicepersons with ties to DePaul.
Kenya Scholar Exchange: Neil Vincent, Social Work. $4,990 to sponsor a two-week international community-service program involving the Master of Social Work and Public Service programs in collaboration with Tangaza College’s Institute of Social Ministry.
Interfaith Sacred Spaces: Ghana Cooper, University Ministry. $2,000 to support the purchasing and placement of sacred works of art from varying faith traditions in the Interfaith Sacred Space room.
McNair Scholars Mission Service Trip: Doreen Hopkins, McNair Scholars Program. $6,000 to support the McNair Scholars Spring 2008 trip to New York where students will serve at Vincentian social service organizations and visit graduate school programs in the New York metropolitan area.
Death Penalty Symposium: Andrea Lyon, College of Law. $5,000 to support the 18th Annual DePaul Law Review Symposium, which will examine the intersection of race, media and capital punishment in the United States. The symposium will be a capstone to the Race to Execution Symposium held at the College of Law in 2003 and the Race to Execution Outreach Program.
International Women’s Day: Kelly Razzouk, student, College of Law, and M. Cherif Bassiouni, College of Law. $3,000 to support the International Human Rights Institute's 2nd Annual International Women's Day event.
Socially Responsible Leadership: Karl Brooks, Student Leadership Institute. $3,000 to support the Student Leadership Institute’s campus-wide symposium for students on Socially Responsible Leadership.
Community Service Initiative Reception: Shaye Loughlin, College of Law. $3,000 to support a reception to recognize law students who have shown a commitment to legal as well as non-legal community service.
Thursdays with St. Vincent: Mark Laboe, University Ministry. $2,750 to support two day-long, mid-week spiritual retreats for DePaul staff and faculty focused on Vincentian spirituality for life and work.
Vincentian Leadership Staff Development Program: Mary McGuinness, The William and Mary Pat Gannon Hay Vincent de Paul Leadership Project. $5,000 to support strengthening the connection between DePaul professionals and the founding mission of the university through leadership programming centered on Vincentian identity and values.
Vincentian Praxis and the Geopolitics of State Formation in France: Alex G. Papadopoulos, Department of Geography. $5,250 to study the role and contributions of the Vincentian praxis on the formation of the modern French state in the 17th century.
Four previously funded grants received additional funding:
Cesar Chavez Service Series: Marisol Morales, Steans Center for Community-based Service Learning. $3,000 to support the spring 2008 Cesar Chavez Service Day and subsequent educational programming.
Incunabula and Rare Book Cataloging: Kathryn DeGraff, Special Collections and Archives, Richardson Library. $1,000 to catalog rare Catholic theology books printed in Greek and Latin between the 15th and 18th centuries.
The Saint Makers: A Living Tradition in American Art from the Southwest: Louise Lincoln, Art Museum. $5,000 to assist in the exhibition of unique religious images from the American Southwest to be presented at DePaul’s Art Museum January 2008.
Celebrating the Vincentian Mission: Len Cavise, College of Law. $1,200 to support the 3rd Annual Public Interest Law Conference to be held autumn 2008.
